I do feel as well that for bands to be successful that they need a second unbiased pair of ears (it would be great if that second pair of ears was an engineer as well). i have seen bands where they will have the guitarist or someone else be the engineer, and it just doesn't work as well. Like you stated, you just need a fresh perspective nowadays

Re: Tell Me What I Need To Know

Well, it all comes down to knowing your customers right? You like short and sweet. Comparing the 2, I'd probably prefer Metallica's because it gives me a sense of personality.

Is there a middle ground like, usually short and sweet--occasionally a little bit more?

Re: Seven Weeks

I love it! Applying this knowledge to life and work and connecting past experiences to it, is really cool. Having experience in the creative and business worlds *and* connecting the two is a fun place to be.

Re: Seven Weeks

What made you decide to go to the program? I ask because my tendency to bounce between the art world and business world in my own work has made me curious about maybe doing something similar at some point. Do keep us posted on how it's going. Watching and helping artists be creative with how they do
that is what I'm excited about.

Re: Use Care in Connecting With an Audience

In addition to the 'real and authentic' value I'd say that there's another benefit that an artist gets from using the newest form of broadcast tools (correctly).

The ability to communicate a constant stream of one's life to a large number of individuals creates a level of familiarity and a very strong connection with minimal investment.

For example, while we're not too close I feel a stronger connection to you partly because I'm able to follow your day-to-day activities... the same activities that I have traditionally only known for close friends. I mean, I know that you went hiking in the canyon, had lunch in burbank and enjoyed a smoothie.

Artists can benefit similarly.

Some are already using twitter to this end,

http://twitter.com/davidusher
http://twitter.com/benkweller

Re: The Future of Sound Engineering

Good points.

Re: http://www.patwoodward.com/2008/06/bring-on-incentives.html

economics says that incentives can explain most everything. generally I agree :)

Re: More on that ad-sup discussion

It is mind boggling how passive that is. Every artist today can buy a computer and some recording software, but not every artist is going to be able to get good results with it.

I agree that an experienced mixer -- as well as a mastering engineer and, depending on the type of music, a studio engineer -- are still needed by most artists who want to create great records. In my experience, mixing/mastering can really alter the emotion and impact of a song. Subtle differences in the mix, or the mastering, or even the tracking of your instruments can sometimes be the difference between whether the average listener perceives your song as great and exciting, or just okay and not that captivating.

Re: Kohi Kappu

Yeah, good article.
